Early life
Gabby Douglas Christina Victoria Douglas was born Christina Victoria Douglas on December 31, 1995, in Newport News, Virginia. Her parents, Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins-Douglas brought her up in Virginia Beach. Gabrielle is the youngest of four children. She grew up with her two sisters and her brother, Joyelle, Arielle, and Johnathan Douglas.
Douglas was interested in sports from a young age, and at age 6, she got to try gymnastics for the first time when her older sister talked their mom into going to her gymnastics classes. Soon after she started playing that sport, she showed how good she was. By the time she was 8, she had won the Level 4 all-around gymnastics title at the 2004 Virginia State Championships.
She took her passion more seriously, and when she was 14, she decided to leave her family in Virginia and move to Des Moines, Iowa, to pursue her career and train for the Olympics. After Douglas moved to this new place, her well-known gymnastics coach, Liang Chow, helped her start training.
At this time Gabby lived in Iowa with Missy and Travis Parton plus their four daughters. One of the Parton girls also started training with Liang after becoming interested. Around this time, she was too busy training to go to school, so she decided to start homeschooling in the third grade.
Junior Career
Gabby Douglas finally got a chance to compete internationally at the 2008 US Classic in Houston, Texas, where she placed tenth in the all-around rankings. She also took part in the 2008 Visa Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, where she finished 16th. Douglas did not make the cut for the 2008 Junior Women’s National Team.
After starting her senior gymnastics career in 2011, she was part of the US team that won gold at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy. At the 2011 World Championships, the US team won the gold medal.
Gabby Douglas then went up as a solo competitor and did well. She won silver in uneven bars at the CoverGirl Classic in Chicago and tied for bronze in bars at the US National Championships the next year, in 2011.
Senior Career Victories
Gabby Douglas had the best overall score in the women’s competition at the 2012 AT&T American Cup, but because she was an alternate, her records did not count toward winning the competition.
The year she won gold with the US team at the Pacific Rim Championships was a turning point in her career. Also, that team kept winning competitions. They won gold in the uneven bars, silver in the all-around, and bronze in the floor at the US National Championships.
When she won first place in the all-around at the 2012 Olympic Trials, she earned the only spot on the US women’s Olympic gymnastics team that was guaranteed.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Douglas and her teammates McKayla Maroney, Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross, and Aly Raisman all represented the USA.
They were called the Fierce Five because they led the team to a gold medal at the London Olympics.
It was also a proud moment for the United States because it was the first time the U.S. team had won gold in a team event since the “Magnificent Seven” won at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Also at the London 2012 Olympics, she won gold in the individual all-around competition. Gabby Douglas made history by becoming the first African-American woman in to win gold in an event.
She was only the fourth women from the United States to win that event. Also, she was the first American gymnast in history to win both the team and individual all-around gold medals at the same Olympics.
After the London Olympics, Gabby Douglas worked hard on her training and continued to compete in national and international events. She went back to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as a member of the US women’s gymnastics team.
Gabby won her third gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in the team event. She was part of the Final Five, which also included Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, Aly Raisman, and Simone Biles.
